Hollaback Girl too slick at Ipswich

Speedy Your Song mare HOLLABACK GIRL (4yo m Your Song x Sheeznodoubt) won her fifth race from just 16 starts at Ipswich on Wednesday, leading all the way to run good time in the TAB Benchmark 72 Hcp (1200m).

Ridden by veteran hoop Jim Byrne, who has won all five races on Hollaback Girl during her career, the mare was always in control of the race and kicked clear round the turn before holding off a late challenge from runner-up Shooting Love.

It was a great performance and testament to the mare’s ability when she is able to use her speed to dominate a race.

“She’s got a really good record in terms of a winning strike rate and I’ll speak to the owners to see what the next move might be,” said Brad Spicer.

“She’s had a couple of injuries that have probably held her back from reaching greater heights but she’s tough and is getting rewards this season.”

Congratulations to the winning owners, Hollaback Girl has now won over $130,000 in prize money.

Windy goes woosh

New Zealand import Our Wind Spirit (4yo g Per Incanto x Timpin) made it a perfect three wins from three starts in Australia when he stormed to victory first-up at Ballarat on Thursday to take the Hygain Winner’s Choice BM64 over 1000m.

It was a terrific reward for our owners who have been very patient with this horse; following two wins in his first preparation Our Wind Spirit felt the firm summer tracks while in training earlier this year with trainer Lindsey Smith electing to ease off and wait for more give in the ground.

Our Wind Spirit has thrived in his work this time around and is set for a big campaign.

“Michael Rodd said after the race that the horse is still raw and learning, so we’re in for a really good campaign by the looks of things,” said Brad Spicer.

Keep a close eye on Our Wind Spirit, he’s definitely a horse to follow this winter.

Supporting Mirabel – Rock Around The World

The Mirabel Foundation is a fantastic organisation that works with children orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use who are now living in kinship care. Mirabel runs a wide range of programs to support both carers and children and work with some of the most vulnerable children in our communities and Spicer Thoroughbreds are happy to support the foundation.

Mirabel has an upcoming event that we need your help to support – Rock Around The World – see the details below and please get involved in a great cause.

Who: Amazing charities, a bunch of celebrities, and YOU!

What: A virtual fundraising challenge

When: Sunday 21st June 2020

Where: Your place!

Why: Supporting our community’s most vulnerable at this time

Mirabel has teamed up with 6 great charities to create a virtual step-a-thon, supporting our community’s most vulnerable in these difficult times.

While many of us are feeling the impact of lockdown on our less-active bodies, mental health and sense of connection, others are finding it harder than most. A group of eight not-for-profits supporting vulnerable kids, mental illness and disability have banded together to get us all off the couch and get moving for a great cause. Join us on Sunday June 21st as we Rock Around The World with a celebrity-filled, live streamed event, linking us all together as we take on this physical challenge whilst raising much needed funds along the way.

Ever wanted to do star jumps with a sports hero (let’s face it who hasn’t)? Want to rock out with a singing legend? Whether you’re Stepping (walk or run), Rocking (dance, wriggle or move), or Rolling (wheelchair, cycling or skating) every movement makes a difference . Take on a personal challenge (reckon you can scoot 20km in one day?) or as part of a team of colleagues, family or neighbours (you can relay 58,000 steps to the top of Everest).

Together we’re aiming to lap the world, with 50 million steps, rocks or rolls in total. It’s easy to track your movements through the Rock Around the World website and join in the livestream event throughout the day as we beam motivation, laughs and special guests into your home. So choose your challenge, set your fundraising target, select Mirabel and let’s get ready to Rock Around the World together!

Registration is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Dee Keepa bolts in

Spicer Thoroughbreds welcomed another New Zealand import home as a winner when Dee Keepa (4yo m Keeper x Royal Visit) absolutely bolted in at her third Australian start in the Porter Plant Hire F&M BM64 (1200m) to confirm her bright future.

Dee Keepa had shown plenty of promise in a handful of starts in New Zealand before she was purchased by Spicer Thoroughbreds on behalf of a group of clients and has given trainer Lindsey Smith cause for optimism after three good runs – including when breaking the Ballarat track record as a runner-up.

“She will be winning city races in the future, Lindsey is of that opinion as well but this prep was all about getting her to settle in,” said Brad Spicer.

“Matt (Cartwright) gave her a great ride today – he actually beat us home the start before – and the mare really exploded clear when he asked her. She’ll go for a break now and will come back for the spring.”

Dee Keepa’s win continued a fantastic winning record for New Zealand recruits purchased by Spicer Thoroughbreds, joining the likes of Lucky For All, Mystery Shot, and Mr Cancun as successful tried horse purchases – but perhaps the most exciting Kiwi import is en route to Australia at the time of writing, the highly regarded stayer Kissinger will join Lindsey Smith’s yard ahead of a tilt towards the 2020 Spring Carnival.

Congratulations to all of our winning owners involved in Dee Keepa, here’s to a bright future!

Capital Zous makes a winning debut

It’s been a patient wait for the connections of CAPITAL ZOUS (3yo g Zoustar x Invested Capital) but that patience was rewarded in spades when the powerful son of Zoustar ran out a convincing winner of the Bet365 3YO Maiden Plate over 1200m.

Importantly it was a winning return to Australia for Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michael Rodd, continuing a long association with Spicer Thoroughbreds on his return from Singapore.

“Capital Zous has always shown us plenty and Lindsey (Smith) has a big opinion of him but you only have to look at him to see why he has taken some time, he’s a big strong lad that has taken some time to mature but because he has that engine we’ve been happy to wait,” said Brad Spicer.

“Roddy said he never handled the track either which adds more merit to the win, he did it on raw ability. He’s not the perfect horse yet and he’ll make mistakes but he’s got a big future.”

WATCH the winning replay on this link.

In a shrewd move, our business was able to secure Capital Zous’ half-sister by Written Tycoon before her older relation showed up his talent on the track. She’s by a leading sire and from a family that is about to go whoosh and we are so happy to have bought her as one of our cheapest recruits of season 2020.

A big congratulations to all involved with Capital Zous, and a big thanks as always to the team at Lindsey Smith Racing and to jockey Michael Rodd.
