After Captain Britain’s brilliant effort at The Valley, we didn’t have to wait long for our next winner – in fact it came in the next race with our quirky galloper, No Drama.
Courtesy of an 11/10 ride by gun jock Beau Mertens, No Drama notched up his first City win, long overdue as he doesnt do himself many favours. From knocking out teeth in the barriers to getting scratched before he got to the barriers, his name could not be more of a misnomer. Thankfully he was (almost – he was slowly away) on his best behaviour, and got the job done.
Beau had him back 2nd last on the fence after that scratchy jump and he looked under pressure approaching the half way mark when the sprint went on. As Beau got into his work, the horse responded very well but needed to find the right path. Rather than try and get to the outside Beau decided to take the shortcut and ride for luck. It was a prudent decision and despite him not being able to see much in the driving rain, he eyed a small gap through a clear part of his goggles and punched No Drama between runners. The horse responed and burst through to score impressively.
We purchased No Drama as a tried horse from NZ. At his first Australian start he missed by a lip when odds-on at Morphetville. Things didnt go entirely right for him that day and that seems to have been the pattern since. Thankfully we seem to have broken the hoodoo with that win.
He will next to the Ballarat Cup day meeting for a 0-84 race over 1400m.
