Koka Wins at Ballarat

Congratulations to one KOKA for the win in Race 3 at Ballarat today – the Evergreen Turf Maiden Plate. It was great to see such a big effort from a very inexperienced horse and get the desired result!

Michael Walker rode him perfect and the only way is up for our guy. Michael said he has a promising future over a trip when he learns what he is doing, but he might be still 12 months away from his maturing fully.

Leon was very happy with today’s win and wants to keep educating the boy in the bush, putting the temptation of coming to the metro area off until next campaign.

Horse of the Month

Our Horse of the Month for October, is the Denman x Jacilo Colt.

He is by an emerging star in the stallion ranks in Denman out  of a mare Jacilo who has  had 3 foals to the races, for 2 group winners  which is a fantastic strike rate.  Denman was regarded in his 3 year-old year as star, and proved that by winning the Group 1 Golden Rose, and prompting his trainer Peter Snowden to say “he is the best horse I have  every trained “.  Denman won 9 of his 12 lifetime starts.
Our colt is a half Brother to Villifye, a group 2 winner, and Miss Keepsake, who took out the Group 1 QLD Oaks in fine style. The colt also hails from one of the best families in the stud book, being closely related to group 1 winners in Grosvener, Mahaya, Shadea, Niello and Lonhro, just to name a few. He has the pedigree and the looks to make it as a serious horse.
The colt  will be trained by Leon Corstens with 10% Shares @ $18,000 (plus GST) with 5% shares are available on request.

Commanding Jewel wins Let’s Elope Stakes
Mathew Toogood, AAP

Commanding Jewel returned to winning form with a convincing performance to take out the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Having taken benefit out of her first-up run from an injury-enforced spell, Commanding Jewel ($9) settled midfield in the 1400m Group Two event for mares before sprinting to the front in the straight.

She defeated the Chris Waller-trained Catkins ($10) by a half length with the same margin to A Time For Julia, the $8 favourite.

Trainer Leon Corstens was relieved to get the three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel back in the winner’s circle.

“I’ve been in racing for quite some time and she’s a very good horse,” Corstens said.

“I think it’s a relief more than anything. People expect a lot of the horse and myself and it’s great that we got there.”

Commanding Jewel won last year’s Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) but missed the autumn.

She finished sixth in her comeback race in the Carlyon Stakes over 1000m but was better suited up in distance on Saturday.

Corstens said he would wait and see where he heads next with the four-year-old but he has a Group One target in sight next month.

“I’d like to head towards the Toorak and we’ll see how we go from there,” Corstens said.

Ben Melham was having his first ride on Commanding Jewel and was impressed by the way the daughter of Commands sprinted when he asked her for an effort.

“She travelled up really well and produced a good turn of foot like the class horse that she is,” Melham said.

Judicial Rock Wins at Wodonga

Well as it normally happens in this game, when you’re  heading for a race with Education in mind, horses can make you look like fools, and today Leon and I are happy to be called fool’s – WOW what a win !!!!

In all seriousness guys,  you have seen today what our filly is capable of, as we see that in her gallops on the training track every day,  and we are so happy to finally see her put it all together on race day .

Great training effort by Leon switching the gear changes and Darren Gauci turned back the clock with a ride Scobie Beasley would be proud of.

Leon was a little emotional afterwards and now we have the  good problem of trying to make a path towards some better fillies races this spring.

Congratulations guys and well done on the win !!

Commanding Jewel Primed for Return

Classy mare ready for return after solid Valley session

Craig Williams has given Group 1 winner Commanding Jewel the thumbs up ahead of her long-awaited return to racing this Saturday.

The star jockey had his first feel of the Leon Corstens-trained four-year-old in an 800m piece of work at Moonee Valley, the venue for the $120,000 Listed 1print.com.au Carlyon Stakes (1000m).

The Thousand Guineas heroine was given a solid hit out by Williams, covering the gallop in 50.5 seconds, which included a 36secs 600m split and 23.9secs final 400m, and the globe-trotting hoop was impressed with the feel she exuded.

“Leon asked me to give her a really good half-mile gallop and she really solid inside the last 600,” Williams said of Commanding Jewel, who did not wear the blinkers she sports on raceday during the work.

“She pulled up she had a nice blow. That will really put her in good stead for Saturday’s 1000-metre race.

“She’s a lovely horse to ride, she felt really smooth this morning and it was good to get a feel of her.”

Williams has been booked for the first two rides of Commanding Jewel’s Spring Racing Carnival campaign – the $220,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on 7 September to follow – with Damien Oliver expected to return after that.

Commanding Jewel, a daughter of Commands and three-quarter-sister to unbeaten megastar Atlantic Jewel, has not started since claiming the Thousand Guineas with Oliver in the saddle last October.

Williams said he doubted Commanding Jewel’s ability to get the 1600m Guineas trip last Spring, but combination of physical maturity combined with the feeling he got this morning suggested she could get further if trained for it.

“Even though she was won the 1000 Guineas, I thought she was probably too brilliant to,” he said. “But she seems to have great a mannerism to say that she would be able to relax if they wanted to get out to a distance.”

Corstens will wait until after the Let’s Elope Stakes before locking in Commanding Jewel’s Spring plans, but she has been entered for the $3 million Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on 26 October.

The Carlyon Stakes is one of two $120,000 Listed events on the Moonee Valley card that also includes the Essendon Nissan McKenzie Stakes (1200m) for three-year-old colts and geldings, in which Williams will partner the Danny O’Brien-trained Shamus Award.
