French import, Sabar showed he could be top notch after an easy Maiden victory at Hamilton on Jan 17th.

The Arqana ready-to-run purchase, was first up this afternoon and sent out at a short quote for his return. He debuted back in July on a very heavy track and just missed, going down by a narrow margin but anyone who saw the run would have been keen to parlay at Hamilton.

Sabar is by Almanzour, the sire of Manzoice, winner of this year’s Victoria Derby, as well as the very promising, New Zealander, Dynastic. He has a real touch of class about him and that was on display.

The 4yo gelding wasn’t driven mad by his rider, Beau Mertens, rather was allowed to just keep out of trouble, 3 wide and though he had no cover he still was the only one you wanted shares in on the corner. Mertens gave Sabar a little slap and he imediately found 2 more gears to just about leave the rest of them standing, going to the line with a fair bit up his sleeve to score by 2.8L

Although we believe he can get to lofty heights, we will progress him through his classes with an eye on the spring carnival later in the year

All being well, he’ll be back for the proper stuff in the Spring!
